Frequently Asked Questions

Some helpful answers to get you where you want to go.

Should I have a specific Keywords section on my resume?

A start: If you do nothing else, take the top 10-20 Keywords that apply to your experience & education and put them in a separate section of your resume and online profile.  You can even call the section “Keywords”.

Better: Work with your Career Coach to incorporate high value keywords into bullet points that enhance your experience.

Best: Incorporate high value keywords into an executive summary in the top third of the first page of your resume.

I recognize a Keyword, but don’t have any experience with it… what can I do?

First and formost, do not use Keywords on your resume that you don’t recognize or don’t speak to your experience. Lieing to a propsective employer is unethical and wrong… don’t do it.

But these Keywords do serve a very important purpose… the future.  You now know the kinds of experience that will advance your career.  In fact, that may be an interview question.  These keywords can be the answer.

What if I don’t regocnize a Keyword?

For Keywords you don’t recognize, Google them with your Search Term to find out if/how they may apply to your experience.

Remember that the jargon used in your industry/company may not be the same as in another industry/company.

Where should I put my Keywords?

Recruiters can’t find you if you don’t update your online profiles.  Make sure to use your keywords on your resume, and then post that resume online.   Update your Facebook, LinkedIn, Monster, and Careerbuilder.com profiles.  We find a 2.7X improvement in recruiting traffic by posting to more than 1 site, and a 4.6X improvement if you post to all of these sites.

Ok, how do I get that experience?

Some Keywords are Technologies Skills. You can use work assignments, volunteer work, classes, certification, or independent projects to get experience that you can incorporate into your resume (side hustles count!).

How many Keywords will I get and how do I tell which ones are important?

The Engine provides the top 200 words and phrases, ranked by importance.  Higher importance words are more impactul in terms of attracting recruiter attention.
